Baseball is 90 Percent Mental and the Other Half is Physical - Week 3 (6/4)

This week was the big week. The week we did the filming.

I could tell that both Gerald and I had some nerves when we began filming and we struggled some at the start, but we found our rhythm and comfort zone really quickly.

I learned a lot about how to work in front of a camera that day. It felt really unnatural at first but I got accustomed to it. Knowing that there are three cameras pointed at you and feeling that a mic is clipped onto your shirt changes the dynamic entirely. Because I was aware of that, I felt more pressure to act or present in a certain way. Thankfully, pretty soon after I got used to it and was able to present in the same manner I had when there were no cameras.

If I messed up a line it seemed like there should be repercussions and I would need to start over again. But because we have the power to edit parts out or cut wherever we feel like, it meant I could just pause, count to three in my head and just keep going from where I left off. That was a HUGE tip that the videographer told Gerald and me at the very beginning. It saved us a lot of time and really helped take the pressure off.

Below is a clip of some raw footage that we aren’t planning on entirely using. You can see me start off by counting to three, mentally preparing to take it from the top and then jumping right into it. There are a few moments that are awkward or lacking flow between Gerald and me, but there are also a handful of moments that will be valuable to a final product.

(Just to note: The video here was taken on my dad’s phone and is not the actual film that will be presented in the final product)

Even though I had spent weeks preparing the script, coordinating meetings, going through rehearsals, and more; even with all that preparation there is no guarantee that everything will go smoothly or happen the way you want it to. Fortunately, everything went even better than I could have imagined. So much of that is thanks to the fact that everyone I operated with, worked extremely hard and diligently to help me with this project.

All that is left on my schedule is to wait for the turnaround from the videographer. Once he has a polished product I will communicate with him on any final changes and then the project will officially be finished.

  1. Wow, Kell! I'm so impressed by your organisation, follow-through, and collaboration with professionals who are clearly happy to work with you. Congratulations on getting through the bulk of the work to complete your objectives successfully. I look forward to seeing the videos after you finish working with the videographer. It was a pleasure to talk with you and Gerald last week, and to hear from both of you how well the project was going! Wendy
